Bumble Bee Baby Shower Inspiration Board

Bumble Bee Baby Shower Inspiration Boards

Today’s post provides inspiration for throwing a bumble bee baby shower for the Mother to Bee and the soon arrival of the new bundle of joy that is as Sweet as can Bee! Typically most people will utilize a black and yellow color palette for this popular bumble bee theme, however I wanted to show you a couple inspiration boards for different color palettes: yellow and gray & yellow and brown!  You can even get fancy and use a variety of shades for each color i.e. charcoal gray and mustard yellow or dark brown and light yellow; add accent colors such as ivory, white, tan, gold, and silver; and/or add patterns and shapes such as chevron, circles, stripes, and floral. (Please bee kind and leave me a comment below letting me know which one is your favorite.)

Jake & The Neverland Pirates Birthday Party: Bryson DeCuir’s 2nd Birthday Party

I hope by now that you guys have realized what a huge arts & crafts/DIY fan I am – I LOVE working with my hands and creating things, plus it’s very therapeutic and I love to see my work come together. For those of you that missed it, last year I went DIY crazy for my son’s 1st Birthday party – a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse theme. Well this year, I also decided to pick one of his current favorite shows and decided on putting together a Jake & The Neverland Pirates themed birthday party for his 2nd birthday. I had one caveat though with this theme, which was to pull off a creative Neverland pirate’s theme with no skulls – personally I am not a fan of skulls, especially for kids – so if you know anything about pirate parties, skulls are everywhere. I definitely had a challenge on my hands, but I saw it as a creative challenge to create more DIY decor items for the party – fun, fun, fun!

First, I created a Jake & The Neverland Pirates invitation to mail out to close family and friends. Here is the invitation:

brysons invitation blog.001-001

After the invitations were taken care of I went to work on brainstorming and soon after began shopping for items at my favorite stores: Dollar Tree & Michaels! After a month or two of planning and DIY projects, it all came together beautifully for his 2nd birthday. I am super excited and couldn’t wait to share the amazing pictures with you – a huge THANK YOU to Danny Mariscal from The F Stop Design & Photography for taking these awesome pictures that captured all of my hard work!

My months of planning paid off and boy did the birthday boy and his guests have a blast! The kids, and even some adults, got to enjoy inflatable slides and a foam shooting range for 1.5 hours, plus face-painting, caricature drawings, and pirate favors for all the kids. It brought joy to my heart to see all the smiles on our friends and family’s faces. I really can’t tell you how happy I am that all my DIY details came together beautifully and were perfectly captured by Danny’s photography! I am proud to say that every single detail that you see in these pictures were designed, coordinated and/or created by me, except for the Jake & the Neverland Party stickers, Jake & The Neverland Party shirt, and the gorgeous cupcakes and cake pops that were made by Rebekah from Let Them Eat Cake! Mad Hatter Tea Party Baby Shower

Mad Hatter Tea Party Baby Shower

Today’s DIY topic is Baby Showers! I can’t believe it but a couple years have already passed since my baby shower and I meant to share it with you guys earlier, but better late than never. When I had my baby shower in November 2010, I really wanted a Mad Hatter Tea Party themed baby shower. With my planning and DIY obsessed self, I couldn’t just sit back and let my family plan for me – no, I had to be involved. I came up with the idea and had so much fun being involved and making the decor that you will see below. (My only regret is that I didn’t have a photographer capture the beauty, so please forgive me for these novice pictures.)

When it came to the baby shower invitations, I wanted something really fun and clever that would match the Mad Hatter theme. So, I contacted my amazing graphic designer girlfriend Marsinah, (Owner of Blushing Pearl), and she came up with the design for these adorable invitations – I added the verbiage – and viola I had a beautiful invitation that I loved! (FYI – I cut off the bottom to remove the personal information.) What do you think?

 photo 9dae5035-d6ee-4562-bec9-61f4bf42503b_zps61bb570a.jpg

The invitations set the tone for the baby shower and from there I went DIY and baby shower planning crazy! I bought all kinds of unique tea pots for centerpieces, filling each teapot with hot water and allowing my guests to choose their own tea bag flavor and additions. I made “This Way” & “That Way” signs out of cardboard, scrapbooking paper, and painted popsicle sticks to hang around the venue. I made my own hanging tissue paper poms to hang from the ceiling. I made creative favor boxes that said, “Eat Me” full of white chocolate suckers, and “Drink Me” full of personalized tea bags for my guests. I stacked teacups on top of each other along with flowers, playing cards, and confetti for the tables. I made a sign requesting advice from my guests and ordered custom advice cards from VistaPrint. I also ordered the most amazing decorative, fun, and tasty cake from the talented Sara, owner of For The Love of Sugar, and it went perfect with the theme! Take a peek at the party details below!

All in all it was a fun affair and I am happy  that I was able to pull off  a fun and decorative Mad Hatter Tea Party baby shower, of course with the help of my sisters and best friend. I had a wonderful time and opened many lovely gifts for my little one! I hope this post serves as inspiration to any of my DIY readers.

3D-Memoirs is looking for submissions…..

Inexpensive DIY Wedding Decorations

BY GUEST BLOGGER, GAIL OLIVER, AUTHOR OF 663 MUST-HAVE WEDDING IDEAS

For all you DIY brides out there, did you know there are two inexpensive products that can add so many beautiful details to your wedding? Here are some ideas on how to use decorative tape and decorative stamps for a unique wedding look.

Decorative Washi Tape from Pretty Tape on Etsy

Decorative Washi Tape from Pretty Tape on Etsy

x

DECORATIVE TAPE

I love decorative tape and there are so many different types on the market now from fabric tape to paper tape to washi tape. One $4 roll of tape could do your whole wedding!

Use it to Embellish:

  • Centerpiece Vases
  • Envelopes (money envelopes for gift table or wedding invites)
  • Seating Chart
  • Candles
  • Guest Book
  • Paper Lanterns
  • Banners
  • Paper Garlands
  • Mason Jar Drinking Glasses
  • Wedding Cake Base
  • Wedding Favor Boxes
  • Serving Trays
  • Wine Bottles

Make it Different:

  • Mix a combination of 2 or 3 tapes together
  • Use pinking sheers to give the tape a scalloped edge
  • Cut into squares or use a paper punch and make circles or other shapes
  • Punch small holes into the tape for a decorative polka dot design

Lace stamp from mieryaw on Etsy

Lace stamp from mieryaw on Etsy

x

DECORATIVE STAMPS

How gorgeous is this lace stamp above, and again, we are only talking a few dollars. If you are having a vintage wedding, it’s a necessity, but it will add a romantic feel to any wedding.

Use it to Embellish:

  • Wedding Favor Tags
  • Place Cards
  • Table Number Cards
  • Banners
  • Table Cloths & Runners (use fabric paint to stamp)
  • Envelopes (money envelopes for gift table or wedding invites)
  • Signage
  • Cupcake Picks
  • Wedding Programs
  • Menus
  • Paper Napkins
  • Drink Coasters
  • Backdrop Fabric (again, use fabric paint)

Make it Different:

  • Use metallic ink
  • Add glitter when ink is still wet
  • Only use parts of the stamp (as shown in photo)
  • Experiment by dipping in tea to get a vintage feel
  • Stamp over top of one image in a different color, off slightly to create a 3D effect

It is amazing how these two inexpensive products offer you so many possibilities to add all those unique finishing touches to your wedding. How many more can you think of?

WANT MORE UNIQUE WEDDING IDEAS? Then please see my ebook, 663 Must-Have Wedding Ideas, which also has tons of inexpensive and DIY ideas, available at my Etsy shop.

With the holidays being upon us I figured why not do a special DIY Friday post with inspirational ideas for hosting a holiday dinner party. I am a huge DIY’er and DIY fan! (Side note: I can’t wait until we buy a house next year so I can DIY-myself crazy with holiday decor and dinner parties!) When it comes to hosting an awesome dinner party there are a couple must-haves to create the perfect ambiance = great company + amazing food + beautiful ambiance/decor + awesome music! Pull this off and you will have your friends talking about your amazing party for weeks.  (Don’t forget to join the holiday spirit and buy a Christmas tree.)

Whether you are planning a large Christmas holiday get-to-gether or an intimate dinner, after you decide on your guestlist, you’ll want to plan the decor & the menu (food & drinks/libations). Due to all the wonderful ideas I have to share with you, I have decided to split these two elements {Decor & Menu} into two separate posts – make sure you come back tomorrow for some amazing food and drink inspiration and recipes for a tasty dinner party!

{DIY DECOR}

You will definitely want set the tone for your Christmas dinner party, so it is important for you to utilize the decor to create the perfect ambiance for your guests.  To get your creative juices going, here are some decor ideas (with photo examples):

  • Votives & Candles (make sure to distribute them throughout the entire event space) – I would recommend Mercury or gold glass votives in various sizes, heights, and shapes. You can also use clear votives and wrap them with a piece of your favorite ribbon, twine, or fabric.
Candle Votives

  • Pine Cones – Scented pine cones would be an awesome selection if your guests are not sensitive to scents. You can use frosted pine cones, brown pine cones, or choose to paint your pinecones, dip them in glitter, or string them to make a garland. (Check out these pine cone crafts!)

  • Color Palette – Choose a festive color palette for your linens and decor such as shades of brown, red, tan/ivory, burnt orange. Here is an example:

(Find more wonderful Christmas color palette inspiration on Design Seeds!)

  • Linen – Depending on your color palette, select your tables linen and/or runner that will complement your decor elements.

Ever thought that you could never afford to buy linens for a dinner party or event? Me too! At $20 a linen, it could be very expensive to purchase several linen table cloths that you can use over and over again, so most of us will either rent linens that we have to return or purchase plastic/paper linen for our events. 5 Inspiring Ways to Walk Down the Aisle

BY GUEST BLOGGER, GAIL OLIVER, AUTHOR OF 663 MUST-HAVE WEDDING IDEAS

Walking down the aisle is the bride’s big moment, and there are so many fresh ways to make it a jaw dropper. Here are 5 ideas to consider that will have your guests oohing and aweing!

IDEA #1: When ready to walk down the aisle, have your greeters open the church doors and then have each bridesmaid enter the church and step to the side, equal number on each side. Then the bride enters the church and her bridesmaids follow behind her up the aisle, in pairs.

IDEA #2: Have a group of four flower girls. Position two in front of the bride — one directly to your left and one directly to your right, and two behind you on your left and right, all within a two foot distance. Then, walk down the aisle as a group.

IDEA #3: Have a strolling violinist walk a few feet in front, playing and leading the bride down the aisle. When the violinist reaches the front of the church he can just move off to the side.

IDEA #4. Have the bride walk alone from the entrance of the church to the start of the aisle so she gets a solo moment. At the start of the aisle her father is waiting for her, hands her bouquet, offers his arm and walks her down the aisle (you could do the same with the groomsmen and bridesmaids).

IDEA #5. The bride and groom walking back up the aisle is also one of the best parts of a wedding. Prolong it by stopping every three feet or so for a dramatic kiss, allowing guests to get more than just a glimpse of you as well as a take a photo. Or the first time you stop the groom kisses the bride on the hand, the next time he kisses her on the cheek, the final time dips her for a kiss.

Weddings on a Budget

Dear Brides & Grooms on a budget:

After you have answered, “YES!” and all the excitement has died down, your mind becomes flooded with questions regarding the details of your wedding day. This journey to the altar that you are about to embark on requires a lot of research, decisions, planning, and money—whether you choose to hire a planner (which I highly suggest) or you decide to be a “DIY Bride & Groom”, the most important question to kick off your planning is “what is your budget?” You may already have a dollar figure in mind or an idea of what you can afford when faced with the reality of what it will actually cost to invite your closest friends and family to witness your exchange of marriage vows. If you have done any research then you know that a wedding is a major financial obligation and not a cheap one, but you don’t have to spend $20,000+ to have a beautiful wedding. I am confident that a couple can have a beautiful wedding on a budget, but it will take some sacrifice or what I like to call, “opportunity costs”, which basically means the value of what you are losing in choosing an alternative option. So how does this Economics term come into play during your wedding planning process? You and your fiancé will have to determine, what is a “must-have” that you are willing to pay more for vs. an item that you are willing to go with the basic option or forego.

 WHAT IS YOUR WEDDING BUDGET?

*Blank Stare* “Good question”, you say to yourself. First I recommend that you and your fiancé sit down and discuss two questions when it comes to your wedding budget—what would you like to spend? And, what is the absolute max amount that you can afford to spend? — This will give you a budget range to work with, which will provide some flexibility for an extra item that you may want and didn’t budget for or an unanticipated cost that may take you by surprise. You should plan for hitting your initial budget, but it’s nice to know that you have the flexibility to go beyond, if need be.

WHAT IMPACTS YOUR WEDDING COSTS?

Before sharing some cost-saving tips, I want to talk about one of the biggest cost driver for your wedding. Can you guess what will have the biggest impact on your wedding costs? Surprise, it’s your guest count! Your guest count will impact your budget the most because the costs of the following items are typically based per person: invitations, favors, food, drinks/cocktails, tables, linens, wedding cake/cupcakes, etc. Therefore the more guests you have the higher the costs.  I know that it’s easy to want to invite all of your family, even if you haven’t seen them in 10 years, or a friend from college that you keep up with on Facebook. Your parents might even want you to invite all your cousins you have never met or their co-workers, but if they are not contributing to the wedding, you will have to take control of the guest list. If you are on a budget then you and your fiancé will want to scrutinize your guest list and determine the “must invite” guests versus the “maybes”. How do you do that? Well, start with adding close family and friends to your list. You may want to limit your list to people who you have talked to and seen within the last year, that have at least met your fiancé, close co-workers (the whole office does not need an invitation), and choose to have an adults-only wedding. Do not go for sympathy invitations, inviting people because you don’t want to hurt their feelings. Remember this is an intimate affair that you picking up the check on, so you want to be surrounded by close friends and family.  (Keep in mind that not all of the guests you invite will not be able to make it, so for example if  you would like a guest count of 150, then you can get away with inviting 170 guests.)  Make sure to have a guest count in mind when visiting venues so that you can estimate costs.  If you end up with a sizable guest count, but you are trying to stay within a tight budget, then you will likely have to sacrifice or compromise in another area to stay within budget.

HOW CAN YOU SAVE MONEY?

Besides the guest count there are several other cost-saving ways to save money on your wedding without compromising a beautiful wedding. Below I have shared 4 tips on how you can save money on your wedding.

Save Money on the Wedding Venue

You and your fiancé will want to determine how flexible you are when it comes to the season, month, day of the week, and date that you want to get married. You can typically save some money by having a wedding during the off-peak season (typically Nov-March, varies by venue), or having a wedding during the week, Friday, or Sunday. Some venues will offer discounts for day weddings vs. evening weddings. If you have a sizeable guest list, another cost-saving option is to sacrifice location (select a venue farther out) or venue prestige (a venue that may be a little outdated or you have to spend money to decorate it) to save money and remain within budget.

When doing your venue search, try to find one that is all-inclusive or very close to it, this will save you money in the long-run. It is best to find a venue that will include food, drinks (open bar, cocktail hour, signature drink, or BYO option), tables, chairs, & linens in their packages. There are venues that will even include your cake and offer discounted options to rent additional items (centerpieces, upgraded linens & chairs, chargers, lighting, etc).  The more that is included in your package the less you will have to spend out-of-pocket for these items with other vendors.  (Before adding additional items to your package, I always recommend doing a little research to see if in fact you are getting a reasonable deal or if you could save money by utilizing an outside vendor.) (Feel free to use this Venue Analyzer that I developed to help me analyze costs and inclusions between venues to determine which one was offering the most bang for our buck!)

Cut Costs on the Wedding Bar Tab

A lot of brides and grooms like to offer their guests cocktails during their wedding, but for most venues this is an expensive additional cost, which may send your budget overboard. A couple alternatives to a hosted bar for the entire evening is to offer a partially hosted bar (set amount of hours), cocktail hour, signature drink, non-hosted bar, or offer wine/beer with dinner and champagne for the toast.  Another option is to find a venue that allows you to bring your own alcohol. These options will be dependent upon what your venue offers, but it is definitely something you should inquire about when searching for your venue.

Save Money on Wedding Invitations

I’ve seen so many beautiful invitations that make you fall in LOVE with them, but if you are on a tight budget, you may want to cut your costs on your invitation suite. (Keep in mind that a majority of your guests may throw these in the trash, $500+ on paper to be thrown in the trash?) I recommend that you look at ETSY for invitation options. Although there are pricey invitation options on ETSY, among them you will find economical options to pay for a PDF file of the invitation suite customized with your special wedding details. The great thing about this is that you can print it on your own. You can use a company like Overnight Prints or Vista Prints (they always have print deals, plus you can sign-up to receive emails for their specials), upload your PDF and pay to have them professionally printed. For the “DIY” couple, you have the option to print them at home or go to local print shop.

Another option to save on invitations is if you or one of your close friends is a crafty person, you can always make them yourself! You just want to make sure that the costs involved in making the invitations yourself is actually cheaper than purchasing them, or you have just given yourself more work that doesn’t save you money, which is the last thing you need when planning a wedding!

Wedding Flowers & Centerpieces

Flowers are very popular for weddings and with good reason–they make such a beautiful statement. However, the reality is that unfortunately they die, typically only days after your wedding.  Flowers are very expensive due to the materials and labor that goes into making the beautiful finished product. Instead of spending thousands of dollars on centerpieces, do some research (online or in a magazine), find a few centerpieces & bouquets that you like, then find a local florist/floral shop and see what they would charge to make something similar—make sure you give them an idea of what budget you are working with for flowers. (When looking for a florist, keep in mind that there is a good chance that a floral vendor that you see on TV or is widely known is probably very expensive—you are paying a markup for their brand and prestige. It doesn’t hurt to reach out to them, advising of your budget and seeing if they can work with you–just don’t be disappointed if it doesn’t work out.) During your consultation ask the florist to advise which flowers will be available around your wedding date that fit within your color scheme as well as cheaper alternatives, if available. If you are flexible with your flower options, you can definitely save money.

Another cost-saving idea is to use flower alternatives such as fillers, succulents, plants & herbs, candles, or something that combines minimal flowers along with fruit, stones, sand, or any of the other flower alternatives mentioned. You can find a lot of inspiration by searching Google, Pinterest, and wedding blogs.

KEY TO EFFECTIVELY MANAGING A WEDDING BUDGET

During the wedding planning process, the important thing is to have a plan and some flexibility when planning your wedding. Know what you want and must-have versus what you are willing to sacrifice and scale back on. Be realistic and honest with yourselves–the beautiful weddings you see in magazines and on blogs cost money–you may not be able to get everything that you want if you are working on a tight budget. Make sure that you keep track of every expense and use a budget worksheet to forecast your spending.  If you have a wedding planner, it is important to communicate your priorities.

Research is the key to knowing your options and alternatives, as well as knowing if you are getting a reasonable price from a particular vendor. Also, don’t expect to haggle vendors down to the bare minimum, there may be room for negotiation but that is not the case for everyone. Just as you work for a living, these vendors have to make a living too by charging according to their vested interest and time. Lastly, an important thing to remember is that you do not want to sacrifice quality for cost, just because it is cheap doesn’t mean that it is the best option for you.

The journey to the altar that you are about to embark on will require money, time, decisions, research, and can be stressful. It is important for you to remember that this journey to the altar is just a stepping stone to what is ahead and what is important, which is the exchange of your wedding vows and the life that you two will create together going forward. The little details–navy vs turquoise napkins, steak vs chicken, cake vs cupcakes, etc–do not matter in the grand scheme of things. Work together as a team and have fun in reaching your ultimate goal: marriage!
