Wedding Finishing Touches & Unique Details

BY GUEST BLOGGER, GAIL OLIVER, AUTHOR OF 663 MUST-HAVE WEDDING IDEAS

4200f74dc39d96a94d9a7fed244ca9c4

In my ebook, 663 Must-Have Wedding Ideas, I end with a section called, appropriately, finishing touches. Those unique little details you can add to your wedding ceremony and reception that will really leave your guests in awe! Below is just a small excerpt from my ebook:

Set up a bench in front of a scenic area at your reception, like the wedding cake display, and have a friend or relative take guests photos (like a prom photo kind of idea). Include the photo in your thank you notes.

Use a camera cell phone to help far away friends and relatives experience your wedding in near real-time. Take a picture of the two of you leaving the church in your limo, post to your Facebook page or e-mail the photo and then call the recipient. You could use Skype as well.

A yard of beaded trim is not expensive, usually about $2 and can be found in the notions section of any fabric or craft store. It’s an inexpensive way to dress up tablecloths, bridesmaids’ dresses, gloves, wraps, even place cards.

To keep kids busy at an outdoor wedding, put them behind a lemonade stand to serve guests non-alcoholic drinks.

It’s expensive (under $1,000), but as your guests exit the church, how cool would it be to hire a small plane to fly over head pulling a banner that reads, “Congratulations to John & Stephanie, Who Just Got Married!”

Have your musicians continue playing outside after the ceremony to keep the celebration going, until all guests have departed the church.

Create life-size photo cutouts of the bride and groom and put them at the door of the reception hall. Makes for great photographs.

For an outdoor wedding, set up intimate conversation areas by using small tent cabanas that can house 8 to 10 guests.

Give each guest a roll of paper streamers, ribbons and balloons as they leave the church and encourage them to quickly decorate their cars.

Be sure to have some snacks available (nothing that can spill or stain clothes) in the limousine for your wedding party, particularly when you go off to take your photos.

Be sure to honor both sets of parents and serve them the first piece of wedding cake.

Ask your guests to do something specific for the wedding. Maybe you want them all to wear white, or all the women to wear hats, or everyone to hold a candle during the service.

My ebook is available at my Etsy shop. I’ll be back next Monday with more ideas….until thenGail.

Save Money with these Must-Have Creative Online Wedding Tools & Resources

Technology – who can live without it? We are in a rapidly growing technological era and I am amazed at the amount of different opportunities and uses that technology has created for us – things that 10 years ago we wouldn’t even have imagined doing. It seems now-a-days that nearly everyone has a smartphone and even grandpa & grandma has a IPhone!  Well if you are like me then you are always looking for creative apps, online resources, and anything else technological to make daily tasks and life easier. In this day and age advanced technology is incorporated in almost everything (gaming consoles, 3D TV’s, streaming music, WIFI, etc.) So, for those of you brides & grooms that LOVE using technology, I thought I would recommend 5 online technological resources that you could use for your wedding that may actually save you money.

NEW WEDDING TECHNOLOGY

Online Invitations

paperless post

While most couples tend to stick with the traditional paper invitations which can easily cost hundreds of dollars, the truth is that there is a large chance that they are not kept but actually thrown away. (I am not discouraging the use of paper invitations because not only is it traditional but I’ve seen so many amazing, lovely, and creative invitations that I know any guest would be excited to receive in their mailbox.) For those of you that aren’t married to the idea of paper invitations or don’t consider yourself to be the traditional bride and groom, may want to consider sending an online wedding invitation. Why? You save trees, money, and you still get the same beautiful message across with your pertinent wedding day details!  Some people may consider it tacky or a no-no, but I would personally disagree and say that I am noticing that more and more brides and groom’s of today are choosing non-traditional rituals and items over the traditional – which allows them to really personalize their own wedding experience. Plus, the online wedding invitation designs have really improved over the past couple years – giving you the same beautiful details at a lower cost and in a digital format.  If you can’t fully embrace the idea of emailing invitations to your guests or you know you mom would have a panic attack, then consider using it for your save the dates and/or thank you cards! Here are a couple awesome online invitation companies:

Paperless Post - I have really seen this company grow over the past couple years. They have a wonderful variety of invitations and additionally they allow you to select designer cards, envelopes, liners, and logos at reasonable costs.

Greenvelope - Choose from their invitations or upload your own design. You have the option to create your own envelopes and this company donates a percentage of proceeds to a non-profit that maintains trees! Save money, go GREEN, and support trees with this company!

Pingg - This company offers invitations and announcements that cover engagement announcements, wedding save-the-date cards, wedding shower invitations, rehearsal dinner invitations, the wedding and many more.

Virtual Pinboard

Pinterest

The winner in this category without a doubt is Pinterest – an amazing virtual pinboard! While planning your wedding, I recommend that you utilize online pinboards to collect all of your favorite ideas found across the web in one organized place. I would make a virtual story board for everything – Wedding Dress, Wedding Bouquets, Bridesmaid Dresses, Centerpieces, Favors, Escort Cards, Guestbooks, Venues, Wedding Photography & favorite shots, Decor, Invitations, Wedding Ideas, Wedding Resources, etc. As you are doing your online research, make sure to PIN your favorites to you Pinterest boards. This allows you to compile of bunch of ideas and inspiration in one place so that when you meet with your wedding planner and vendors you can use pictures and ideas to explain and show what you are looking for because sometimes sharing your vision and ideas can be one of hardest things to do verbally. Sometimes you know what you want when you see it, but if someone asked you, you have a hard time explaining it so that they can visualize it.

The cool thing about Pinterest is that you can also search their database of pins for certain things you are looking for or follow your favorite people or companies that share amazing wedding inspiration. Also, you can invite your maid of honor, wedding planner, best friend, mom, bridesmaids, and anyone else you choose to pin to your board(s) and help you collect ideas and inspiration for your special day. Pinterest is an awesome gem  - but I caution you – it is VERY addicting!

(If you don’t know what Pinterest is you absolutely have to check it out after you are finished with this post. It definitely needs to be on your must-have list and if you like, feel free to stop by and check out all of my lovely inspiration boards.)

Wedding Websites

wedding window

Share your love story, wedding details & events, directions, and so much more with a wedding website. When I got married in 2008 I used a wedding website and absolutely LOVED it! I am sure that nearly 5 years later, wedding websites have improved leaps and bounds and would make it a practical option of communicating with your guests. Here are some of my favorites:

Wedding Window - Their tagline- “Your wedding. Your website. Your way.” Create a custom wedding website, add photos of you and your love, add your registry deets, have your guests sign your guestbook, let your guests RSVP to your wedding online, and much more! They have so many customizable options, amazing website themes, a bunch of free features, and great customer support!

(I would definitely recommend this company. I used them for my wedding and LOVED them – the experience, creative & elegant themes, flexibility, ease of use, and plus I was able to buy a CD of our entire site as a forever keepsake.)

Wedding Channel - If you are looking for something a little bit more basic, the wedding channel offers a free wedding website option to their members (it is free to sign-up).

E-Wedding – This FREE wedding tool offers a bunch of features and customizable options and themes for free.

Appy Couple –  This wedding app that allows you to create your very own wedding app and website for a low cost one-time cost of $28! Share your wedding logistics, communicate with your guests, share on social channels, and much more! This app is compatible with the Iphone and Android operating systems.

Wedding Apps

wedding app

Let your guests capture all of the beautiful moments, smiles, tears, dance moves, and everything else that your photographer may not be able to catch while he is working on capturing all of your important moments. Plus, it would be great to see photos from your wedding collected from your guests perspective. You can now easily do that with wedding photo apps that allow your guest to take photos, upload, and share instantly. It’s time to ditch the disposable cameras! Here are some of my favorites:

Wedding Party – This FREE wedding photo app allows your guests to instantly collect and share their favorite photos from the wedding in real-time, plus what a fun way to entertain your guests especially before you make your grand entrance and the food is served! (This wedding app is compatible with the Iphone and their Android app is currently in the Beta testing stage.)

WedPics - This FREE wedding photo app for your guests allows them to load photos in real-time and comment or “love” photos and offers lifetime hosting of all content.

Capsule - This wedding photo app offers 3 different pricing package options to choose from based upon your guest count. This wedding photo app is available for the Iphone and Android devices. You can use Instagram or even upload photos from your camera.

Wedding Registry

honeymoon registry

If you were like my hubby and I you had 2 of everything and didn’t need another blender, pot, or microwave on your wedding day. We were going to Hawaii and with all the money going towards the wedding, we didnt have much left over for the honeymoon. So we decided on a honeymoon registry. We shared our honeymoon destination with our guests and picked several honeymoon wish list options, such as a sunset dinner, luau, snorkeling, romantic dinner for two, etc. This gave our guests tangible items that allowed them to feel like they were contributing to an amazing honeymoon for us – a gift they were happy to give. If you are in need of some household items, then a traditional registry would work out perfectly for you two. Here are some cool wedding registry options:

Travelers Joy - My favorite honeymoon registry, but I am biased because I used them for my wedding and had an amazing experience! Low fees, easy to use, thank you options, and easy gift redemption options. Want to see a sample? Here is our honeymoon registry from 2008.

My Registry - This nifty registry allows you to save time by adding registry items from any website into ONE registry! Oh, how convenient! Instead of spending hours in different stores finding a bunch of items to scan, you can surf the web conveniently from home!

Etsy – If you are a lover of handmade, creative, and unique goods, then you will love Etsy! Did you know they offer a wedding registry? With a wide variety of shops and handmade goods, you will be in heaven trying to pick out your favorites for the registry!

A lot of information provided today, but I hope that it was helpful and useful information and that you found some awesome resources to use for your wedding to help you save money! I’d LOVE to hear from you, so please check out all the wedding technology resources above and let me know which ones you loved and which ones you decided to use! When it comes to floral designs incorporated in wedding invitations, Behold Designz prides themself on their floral invitation suites. This Etsy shop is owned by two sisters – one that is all right-brain, an artist whose garden offers the most beautiful of flowers to be found in Australia, which she loves to paint in her sunny studio. The other takes all of her sister’s whimsical floral designs and transforms them into romantic wedding stationery. The beauty in this is that all of their original designs are fully customizable to complement any bride’s color scheme. Here is a sample of their work:

Inexpensive DIY Wedding Decorations

BY GUEST BLOGGER, GAIL OLIVER, AUTHOR OF 663 MUST-HAVE WEDDING IDEAS

For all you DIY brides out there, did you know there are two inexpensive products that can add so many beautiful details to your wedding? Here are some ideas on how to use decorative tape and decorative stamps for a unique wedding look.

Decorative Washi Tape from Pretty Tape on Etsy

Decorative Washi Tape from Pretty Tape on Etsy

x

DECORATIVE TAPE

I love decorative tape and there are so many different types on the market now from fabric tape to paper tape to washi tape. One $4 roll of tape could do your whole wedding!

Use it to Embellish:

  • Centerpiece Vases
  • Envelopes (money envelopes for gift table or wedding invites)
  • Seating Chart
  • Candles
  • Guest Book
  • Paper Lanterns
  • Banners
  • Paper Garlands
  • Mason Jar Drinking Glasses
  • Wedding Cake Base
  • Wedding Favor Boxes
  • Serving Trays
  • Wine Bottles

Make it Different:

  • Mix a combination of 2 or 3 tapes together
  • Use pinking sheers to give the tape a scalloped edge
  • Cut into squares or use a paper punch and make circles or other shapes
  • Punch small holes into the tape for a decorative polka dot design

Lace stamp from mieryaw on Etsy

Lace stamp from mieryaw on Etsy

x

DECORATIVE STAMPS

How gorgeous is this lace stamp above, and again, we are only talking a few dollars. If you are having a vintage wedding, it’s a necessity, but it will add a romantic feel to any wedding.

Use it to Embellish:

  • Wedding Favor Tags
  • Place Cards
  • Table Number Cards
  • Banners
  • Table Cloths & Runners (use fabric paint to stamp)
  • Envelopes (money envelopes for gift table or wedding invites)
  • Signage
  • Cupcake Picks
  • Wedding Programs
  • Menus
  • Paper Napkins
  • Drink Coasters
  • Backdrop Fabric (again, use fabric paint)

Make it Different:

  • Use metallic ink
  • Add glitter when ink is still wet
  • Only use parts of the stamp (as shown in photo)
  • Experiment by dipping in tea to get a vintage feel
  • Stamp over top of one image in a different color, off slightly to create a 3D effect

It is amazing how these two inexpensive products offer you so many possibilities to add all those unique finishing touches to your wedding. How many more can you think of?

WANT MORE UNIQUE WEDDING IDEAS? Then please see my ebook, 663 Must-Have Wedding Ideas, which also has tons of inexpensive and DIY ideas, available at my Etsy shop.

Fresh Ideas for Your Wedding Dress

BY GUEST BLOGGER GAIL OLIVER, AUTHOR OF 663 MUST-HAVE WEDDING IDEAS

Every detail of the bride’s overall look is important on her wedding day. Here are some fresh ideas for small details you can add to your wedding gown that will make it a standout.

Wedding Gown Detail Ideas

  • To make a simple wedding gown more dramatic, take a very long and wide white satin or tulle scarf that compliments the dress, and have it cascade around the front of your neck and down the back of the gown
  • For a winter wedding, consider adding a fake white fur cuffs to the dress sleeves
  • Add a large rosette or draping of fabric on one side or at the back of the gown

entrancing-strapless-wedding-gown-with-delicate-side-rosette-detail_1358416848440

Rosettes and a draping of fabric on side of dress

  • For a early spring or late fall wedding, when the evening will be cooler, have a coordinating lace or brocade jacket designed to wear over the wedding gown
  • As opposed to copying a dress from a magazine completely, considering taking the sleeves from one, the bodice from another, and the skirt from another to see what it creates
  • Have the wedding dress be made of several detachable layers so there is a different dress for the ceremony, a different one for the reception, then a different one for dancing
Screen-shot-2012-03-02-at-12.26.08-PM

Soft floral wedding gown

  • For a spring wedding, a dress made of a subtle floral print could work, especially if the colors are muted
  • Consider all shades of white for a wedding dress, maybe even mix two different shades for the skirt and bodice — pure white, cream, ivory, bisque, vanilla and so forth.
  • Add a collar of ostrich feathers to the neckline for some drama
large_image

Simple brown sash for a fall wedding

  • For a fall wedding, simply add an orange or brown sash to the dress to fit the scenery
  • Have a layer of blue tulle (something blue!) underneath your gown, lightly peaking out below.

Bridal style is all about original touches. Any of these ideas will help give the bride a unique wedding look.

Wedding Trends for 2013

Wedding Trend Predictions for 2013

As you know Wedding Trends for 2013 is a hot topic right now. I am sure that you have seen a lot of buzz on the blog (this year and last year) about wedding trend predictions for this year, but this post is a bit unique because I wanted to add my own personal feedback on what I have noticed and think will be hot wedding trends for 2013!

Creative, Eclectic, Unique & Intimate Venues

As a wedding planner in Southern California, I’ve noticed my clients are asking and booking more creative, eclectic, and non-traditional venues for their wedding day. Although the beach, hotel, and woodsy outdoor venues have been super popular, I think that we will see more unique venues for brides and grooms in 2013, such as museums/art galleries, restaurants, rooftops in downtown areas, vineyards, industrial-like buildings, private homes, and more. (My venue prediction is featured on Bridal Tweet’s 2013 Wedding Trends post – take a look!)

Here are a couple examples of this trend prediction - Creative, Eclectic, Unique, & Intimate Venues.

Last summer, one of my brides exchanged vows at the Long Beach Museum of Art:

Photographer | David from Novia Bella Photography

Another one of my clients shared their love vows at a rustic stable in Huntington Beach called Red Horse Barn:

Photographer | Pavonne Photography

My current bride plans on getting married at a Mason Lodge and you have no idea how beautiful her wedding and reception are going to be at this eclectic venue – can’t wait to share pictures next year!

STYLE & DECOR TREND PREDICTION FOR 2013

When it comes to style and decor for 2013, I anticipate sequins and pearls being a hot new trend for weddings next year in apparel, accessories, and wedding/reception decor. Here are a few examples:

Valentine’s Day Wedding Theme Ideas

♥ GUEST BLOG BY GAIL OLIVER, AUTHOR OF 663 MUST-HAVE WEDDING IDEAS

Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular days to get married. Here are some fresh, new wedding ideas that will help add the Valentine’s theme to your day in a stylish way.

Wedding Decorations with a Valentine Theme

  • If you don’t want to decorate exclusively in red, make the color scheme pink and white with small pops of red. Something like red chargers under the plates, one red flower in the middle of a pink bouquet, or red headbands on the bridesmaids.
  • Since roses are very romantic, scatter red rose petals down the aisle (if the church approves), as well as on the head table, buffet table and gift table. Bags of simulated rose petals can be purchased at most craft stores.
  • At the reception make the backdrop behind the head table a drape of red satin.
  • For place cards, use miniature white plaster cupids (also available at any craft store) and pierce the guest’s heart-shaped place card through Cupid’s arrow.

Romantic Wedding Dinner Menu

  • If serving dessert, be sure to have the chef line the side of each plate with a heart piped in chocolate or raspberry sauce.
  • Offer guests a romantic chocolate drink like Godiva’s White Chocolate Liqueur when they arrive or at the end of the evening.
  • Embellish the wedding cake with small cinnamon candy hearts.

Valentine Wedding Attire

  • For a wedding gown, the bride could wear a red wedding dress if she dares, but otherwise she could just add hints of red, like small red crystals in the veil or dress train.
  • Bridesmaids could wear dresses of varying shades of red or, alternatively, different fabrics such as red velvet, red satin, red taffeta, and so forth.

Other Valentine Wedding Ideas & Details

  • It will cost quite a bit more but use raised red velvet lettering on invitations, or have the inside of the envelope lined in red
  • Consider one of the original Valentine designs from the 1700s call the True Love Knot - a hand drawn maze of knotted loops with no beginning or end, for invite design
  • Plan to arrive at the church in a vibrant red car, such as the Saab 9-3 Convertible in Laser Red, the Jaguar XJ in Radiance Red or the BMW 7 Sedan in Merlot Red
  • Simple and inexpensive gestures include leaving a large opened heart-shaped box of chocolates on the gift table and beside the guest book. They’ll sign the book for sure.
  • When you want your guests to get the bride and groom to kiss, they must tell their own love story or the most romantic gesture they have ever received.
  • Instead of throwing the bouquet to the single women, randomly give each non-married female guest a single rose as a Valentine’s gesture. Put a fake diamond ring inside of one and whoever gets that one, is the next to get married.
